Now in public preview: Ultrasound Howling Detection in Teams Meetings
Description
Currently in Microsoft Teams, when multiple users are in a Teams meeting in the same room, a feedback loop is created, causing an echo. With this update, if multiple users are participating with laptops from the same location, Teams will notify the user that another Teams device has been detected nearby and is already included with audio in the current meeting. Teams will automatically mute the microphone and speakers of the person that joined when a user joins with audio on.
Flighting status
Available to everyone in Public Preview channel.
How to enable
When a user attempts to join a meeting where other participants are already physically present in the same room, they will receive a notification upon joining. The notification will inform them that multiple individuals are already present in the meeting and that the speaker and microphone switch will be automatically turned off to prevent any audio echo. However, the user has the freedom to manually turn the switch back on at any time they desire.
Note 1: If you need information about enabling the public preview itself, see “Enable the public preview for Teams” below.
Note 2: To be able to use this feature, user needs to be in Public Preview. Other meeting participants are not required to be in Public Preview.

Wanted to point out above feedback. Please allow a method to disable this on a per-user basis.
- UsernameNotAvailableBrass ContributorSome of our younger employees are also picking up on this high-pitched piercing mosquito noise and complaining.
I guess the Microsoft Teams devs might be of a certain age and didn’t catch this during testing!

Jan_Steberl How does this work with users in a shared office space on the same call with headsets? Will this mean users always enter the meeting with no speaker or mic? We often have users close to each other in an open office on the same call.
- TerenceRabe1Brass ContributorThis already happens when there are more than a few people joined to a call anyway... people are used to joining muted so will just need to look out for their speakers being turned off as well. Another reason why headsets should be used in open plan environments 😉
- Awesome!
