Trim feature removed in new Stream?
Has the trim feature been removed in both the new (SharePoint) Stream and tradtional Stream interface? I discovered this today when attempting to trim a video recorded from a Teams meeting. The ...

I know that not having trim in Stream (on SharePoint) is painful. Full video editing will come with clipchamp being added to enterprise later this year.
It's been a long road for us in the product group to get to a plan for what to do in Stream. We apologize for how long it's taken us. It's not easy for us to just add back the ability that was in Stream (Classic) to SharePoint, the underlying architecture and storage is very different.
Thank you for all the feedback you've shared and all the votes in the ideas forum. We've finally been able to land on a design for a simple trim option directly in Stream. We aren't able to share a timeline or roadmap item yet until we get further on the engineering design and start coding.

Sep 21, 2022We don't have trim for videos in onedrive or SharePoint. Only in Stream (Classic). We are trying to build a simple version into the new experience. We are thinking of doing a default start and end time for the video. The video would start at that point and pause at end point but users could see and jump to parts outside these points.
Would that meet your need in the short term while we build a more complicated trim feature or until clipchamp for full video editing is available?

Yes, this would work for my needs. All I ever needed to do was shorten the intro time and trim the end time.- krisstarkDec 14, 2023Copper Contributor
I think that simply having a default start and end time is about the most monumentally poor and lazy way out of a problem that did not need to happen.
Sure, there may be a few cases where having the video available with the "tails" still there might be OK, but in most cases, it gets trimmed for a reason, and not only because of it being irrelevant.
It has to be actually gone...
- BHBrookfieldOct 02, 2023Iron ContributorThat sounds good. What would the default start / end be based on? Detected video and audio activity? From reading the comments, I believe most users like myself just want the basic capability to trim the first and last parts of a recording. More features later but we want to get back to this capability first. Thx Marc!
- krisstarkSep 07, 2023Copper ContributorWhy does it seem like this was entirely a half baked system and migration requirement? Way too many features that are extremely useful in Stream (Classic - not this Sharepoint junk) appear to be missing, with very little thought on replacing these. Also - IMHO a horrible job of communicating any change to the system - I only realized when I went to go an upload another installment of our training videos to our in-house channel... If you insist on using the "new" Stream, at least keep the existing system in place until you can replicate *ALL* the features of the classic...

You may be too young to remember, but back at the beginning of the pandemic, there was a problematic trend dubbed "zoom bombing". Some troll/crank/party crasher/hacker/disgruntled employee joins a meeting, and points their camera at something unsavory. You kick them out, and it's still in the recording. I remember it like it were yesterday, because it literally happened yesterday. So, NO, the never-available feature of "start time" and "stop time" would also not meet our needs for trimming a video.

- john_siaJul 07, 2023Copper ContributorI see there were some questions from Marc about our possible use cases (most likely to help with MS's prioritisation exercise).
I wonder, what was MS's use case for removing that feature? Was it something their Stream analytics said no one used (doubtful considering the negative feedback to the change)?
Why did MS feel hiding was better than removing and why did MS feel the owners/editors might want to retain the trimmed content? - WPCRDJul 06, 2023Copper Contributor
Please make at least these editing options available:
Start: first frame
End: last frame
Cut: remove unnecessary parts by cutting them out. - joshjohnsonApr 06, 2023Brass ContributorI think the trim feature is essential, and many of our users are saying they miss this feature. The option you mentioned is a nice idea, but I still see that as fundamentally different, more like chapters etc. I guess you have the potential 'conflict' with ClipChamp... but if users have to take the video out of Stream and then re-upload, this makes no sense unfortunately and quadruples the effort for a simple task that is provided in just about every other enterprise video platform.

We need the trim feature in the new Stream version. In a business setting, we use MS Stream to record meetings. In these meetings, we tend to use the lobby feature to be able to have a lobby. However, to make sure no one forgets, we enable the automated recording. It means any conversation that happens before we officially open the meeting to all is on the recording. Finally, it happens from time to time that people forget to stop the recording at the end. So trim is essential so the ending can be adjusted.
In addition, it can happen that with the automated recording, someone opens the meeting early, thus starting the recording. In this case, we need to be able to trim easily and not just have a revised view of the recording.
Thanks

- sphemakhMar 14, 2023Copper ContributorWhy was it removed in the first place? Just put back the functionality as it was, then discuss how you can improve it. This careless way of developing costs us time and effort. Please do better, don't roll out updates before they are feature-complete.

- JTown98Dec 21, 2023Copper ContributorI really appreciate your response, but not being able to easily trim a teams recording is pretty much a deal breaker. I tried ClipChamp, and this was my experience: 4hr Teams meeting (forgot to stop the recording apparently), original mp4 file from teams was 450MB. Used ClipChamp to trim it to 44 minutes, and exported the file (in the same resolution as the original; there aren't any more options for frame rate or compression in ClipChamp) and I got a 2.2GB mp4 file. Bonkers.
