Lighting the Match Thumbnail: Luck or a Mockup Hack?
I'm trying to achieve a pleasantly and visually browse-able experience on our SharePoint video portal pages. (as you know from my pestering about custom thumbnails lately )
Kind of like the demos here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/stream/streamnew/features-new-version-stream
The match thumbnail: Did Stream really randomly pick that thumbnail? Or are the thumbnails picked from like X seconds into the video, where we can create videos w/ that in mind?
Or is this a preview of things to come?
Your previews are more enticing than mine, and I have great envy.
- 😳 👎 Demo fakery on my part, those videos are just a still image all the way through the entire video.
Today the thumbnail is automatically set at the 33% point in the video. So if can strategically put the most perfect image at exactly that point you are golden! What more could you want? (Joke)
In all seriousness, we are testing custom thumbnail now and hope to add it to the public roadmap soon and get it released in the coming month (fingers crossed).
As we have it working now you can upload an image file or just scrub to a good point in the video and use that frame as the thumbnail.

Ok, well thanks for the honesty & the update. If you have hiccups w/ custom thumbnails, maybe change the automatically-generated one to like 5-seconds in or something? A lot of times that'd capture the title screen.- Marc Mroz

Custom thumbnails is on the public roadmap now!!
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Stream&searchterms=93225
The dates we list on the roadmap are the month we are aiming to start rollout. And we typical take up to 3 or less months to finish rollout.
I'm hoping custom thumbnails starts rollout a bit earlier and finishes early, I know lots of you are waiting for this one.
