I have absolutely no idea what Microsoft Defender 365 wants me to do here

The process starts with an emal:

There's more below on the email - an offer for credit monitoring, an option to add another device, an option to download the mobile app - but I don't want to do any of the, so I click on the "Open Defender" button, which results in this:

OK, so my laptop is the bad boy here, there's that Status not of "Action recommended", with no "recommendations" and the only live link here is "Add device", something I don't need to do.  The only potential "problem" I can even guess at here is that Microsoft is telling me that the laptop needs updating.  Since I seldom use the laptop, only when traveling, I'd guess the next time I'd fire it up the update will occur, but of course I really don't know that's the recommended action it's warning me about, do I?

You'd expect that if something is warning you "ACTION NEEDED!!!" they'd be a little more explicit, wouldn't you?

  • “Action recommended” is a warning badge shown by Microsoft Defender to indicate that the device still requires attention. This typically appears when one or more security actions haven’t completed, such as:

    • Pending security or protection intelligence updates
    • A scan that hasn’t finished
    • A protection feature that is turned off or not fully enabled

In most cases, this is a local device state rather than a Defender service issue.

    1. Check the Windows Security status on the device
On the affected PC, open Windows Security and review the yellow “Actions recommended” message under Security at a glance.
Then go to Virus & threat protection → Protection updates, select Check for updates, and once complete, run a Quick scan.
This warning is commonly triggered by outdated security intelligence or an incomplete scan.
    2. Install pending Windows updates and restart the device
Navigate to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install all available updates, and reboot the device.
The badge often clears only after Windows and Defender components fully apply updates and reload following a restart.

If the message persists after these steps, it’s usually worth confirming that all protection features (real‑time protection, cloud‑delivered protection, and tamper protection) are enabled.

Yeah, that can be really confusing !

If you don’t want to use any of the extra options, you can just ignore them and focus on keeping your account secure. Clicking “Open Defender” is fine—you don’t have to do any of the add-ons.

Usually, just checking the security dashboard and making sure everything’s up to date is enough.

I believe if you go to the device's page you will see the 'needed' actions under the Security Recommendations tab.
