How can I merge cells of a table in OneNote?

To get clear I want it to look like this:

But if I paste it in from Excel, then I get this:

Inserting a table within a table is NOT the same. 

And inserting an external spreadsheet is a total mess:

And if you disconnect the spreadsheet, guess what? Now you can't even edit your own data!

This appallingly poor programming by Microsoft. 

To be honest it's basically a deal-breaker for me.
