Is federation an appropriate method to just allow two companies to talk over Teams?

Hi all. 

The company I work for as sys admin is working with a new client. They need to talk over Teams. 

The client is requesting that federation be set up to enable that.

All of our other clients have been happy with Guest Access or External Access straight from Teams.

My only experience with federation is when company A acquires company B, and they need to sync AD and other infrastructure. Because of this, I'm worrying that federation is too great a share for a supplier/client relationship. 

Am I wrong? Have things moved on? Are there any guidance documents for federation in this (or similar) scenario?

    I completely agree with you. I would only apply this kind of federation if you are inextricably linked and have a high demand for collaboration. The functionality you mention would indeed be enough for simple chatting with each other. I would advise you to use shared channels in teams to collaborate with each other in a pleasant way.
