Delete content, retain metadata?

I am looking into the Microsoft 365 compliance documentation and I can't find a clear answer - is there a way (out of the box) to dispose of documents (the attachment, e.g. docx file) but to retain the metadata in place?

This is a key requirement in the Australian compliance sector.
