Leaping to Ai in Africa with less Internet infrastructure
This is a really interesting challenge. For communities with limited connectivity, I’d focus less on bringing everyone online and more on building an offline-first AI setup.
Small, locally hosted AI models could run on affordable laptops or mini PCs, allowing volunteers and students to access basic AI tools without a constant internet connection. You could also distribute offline learning content, coding environments, documentation, and datasets that sync whenever connectivity becomes available.
For the 6,000 volunteers, a “store-and-forward” approach could work well: volunteers work offline, then periodically sync updates when they reach an internet-connected location.
For the STEM academies, I’d start with offline coding + small AI models rather than trying to replicate ChatGPT completely. That could make the program much more practical and sustainable in low-bandwidth environments.
