Query Regarding Changing UPN and Email Address with new Domain Name in Exchange Hybrid Environment

Hi Microsoft Tech Community,

I'm currently navigating a transition within my organization where we need to change the UPN and Email Address while retaining the old email address as a secondary address after our organization's Domain Name changed. Our environment operates on Exchange Hybrid. Let's say, the previous UPN is <"user1@olddomain"> and now it'll change to <"user1@newdomain">.

I'm particularly concerned about the impact this change will have on Outlook Profiles and Microsoft Teams. Will there be any disruptions or changes to these profiles following the UPN and Email Address modifications? Additionally, I'm curious about the implications for these profiles when the password expires.

I would greatly appreciate any insights or advice from the community on how to manage this transition effectively.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

    Hi janakkhadka,

we recently changed the UPN for our users in the same environment, and we had no problems what so ever with Outlook profiles, passwords and Microsoft Teams.

The only problem we had was the OneDrive shared documents, but were prepared for this.

What was the case for Outlook Profile after changing the Domain of the Users' UPN/Email?

      Hi,
I think my query was incomplete previously and hence I just edited the Discussion. Actually, our plan is to change the domain name itself. Hence at that time, I think we need to recreate the Outlook Profile and all other Microsoft Teams, OneDrive application as well. I need the confirmation on it.

You'll need to explain the scenario a bit more....Renaming a domain is a pretty big step for not a lot of gain when you can just add an additional UPN suffix and additional SMTP address to Exchange. If that's the way you go, then all the comments above still apply.
I've not ever heard of anyone renaming an AD domain when AAD Connect has been deployed, so that would be interesting.

As the mailbox GUID won't change, the Outlook profile shouldn't either. However, the UPN is the login name for all M365 services, so this will require all users to login to any M365 service with the new UPN. Definitely one to be testing thoroughly before hand as the user experience realy depends on what M365 services are in use
