History behind Messaging.old Folder in Exchange Queue Directory

Just looking for some history as to how or why a "Messaging.old" folder is created in the %ExchangeInstallPath%\TransportRoles\Data\Queue folder?

We noticed this when investigating disk space alert and are curious as to why this folder gets created and if it is safe to delete without affecting Exchange services?
