Exchange Server 2019 to Subscription Edition (SE) Licensing and Migration Guidance
Thank you for your response. I would like to clarify—if we had Software Assurance (SA) with our Exchange Server licenses and Client Access Licenses (CALs), would that have made them eligible for migration?
I’ve come across several discussions in the community where vendors suggest that Exchange licenses with SA and CALs are indeed transferable or distributers (Re-seller) have rights to transfer. Could you please confirm if this is accurate? Alternatively, are Microsoft Exchange Standard Edition CALs treated differently and still require separate purchases regardless of SA?
Additionally, we are currently using Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise (CU15) with 1,100 CALs, but without Software Assurance (SA). We are now planning to migrate to Exchange Standard Edition, and we hope this transition is supported and does not pose any technical challenges.
Kindly confirm both of the above queries so we can proceed accordingly.
Yes, if your Exchange Server 2019 license & CALs includes SA, migration to Exchange Server SE is possible under your active SA coverage. However, licenses without SA or with expired SA are not eligible for migration, and you must purchase new Exchange Server SE licenses & SE CALs.
