Exchange online internal relay
Hi all,
Currently we're migrating from Gsuite to Office365. On Gsuite we have contoso.eu and on Office365 we have contoso.com. I've done the following to have our primary domain live on both platforms:
- I've added the contoso.eu domain as internal relay to Exchange, mx record still pointing to gsuite
- Created a new mailbox with .eu domain within Exchange
- Migrated the mailbox contents from Gsuite to the newly created mailbox on Exchange
- Created a forward for the original contoso.eu mailbox within Gsuite to the newly created contoso.eu mailbox it's onmicrosoft.com alias
Now, when i send a e-mail from within the Office365 tenant from a contoso.com mailbox to this new .eu malbox it's received on Exchange, because the domain is known to Exchange.
When a contoso.com mailbox sends a mail to to another contoso.eu mailbox (still on Gsuite) mail is delivered to Gsuite.
So it works without creating a connector which relays mail for contoso.eu to the Gsuite mx record and i can't get why it is working! Only thing i can think of is that Office sends it to the mx record when no mailbox is found. Don't get me wrong, i'm glad it works this way, but i can't explain it.
