Exchange 2010 to Microsoft 365 Migration – Recommended Approach and Tools

 A direct migration from Exchange 2010 is supported, so an intermediate Exchange upgrade is not required. Use Express or cutover migration for a small, rapid move, and full or minimal hybrid for phased migration, directory synchronization, or coexistence. Staged migration is not supported for Exchange 2010.

Use Microsoft’s native Hybrid Configuration Wizard, Exchange Admin Center migration batches, and Mailbox Replication Service. For PST files, use the Microsoft 365 Import Service with network upload, or Outlook import when there are only a few small files.

Before moving production users, update Exchange 2010 to its final supported service pack and rollup, verify certificates, Autodiscover, DNS, mailbox sizes, permissions, archives, transport rules, public folders, client compatibility, bandwidth, and backups. Run a pilot with representative mailboxes, monitor source server load, avoid overlapping migrations with backups or maintenance, and validate mail flow, Outlook access, delegates, calendars, mobile devices, and migrated item counts before changing MX records.

Third party products can be useful for complex coexistence, reporting, remediation, or difficult PST discovery, but confirm current Exchange 2010 source support and run a proof of concept before purchasing.
