Oct 13, 2016Disable Auto forward to external Recipients
Hello Experts,
We are working on policy to block users from auto forwarding emails to their Personal Accounts or External Recipients.
Block setting up forwarding using OWA
Block Setting up forwarding using Inbox Rules
Block setting up forwarding using any other methogds
Can some one please advice?
We have the same requirements and this is what I did:
Under Mail Flow, Remote Domains, select the Default domain, click the Edit button. Uncheck the box "Allow Automatic Forwarding". Users can create an automatic forwarding rule, but it will not work.

We are also following same path. We do have some shared mailboxes and those needs to forward email to external recipients. I think if you set the forwarding via mailbox properties then it will over ride global settings and mail will be forward. That is what we were looking for.
You can configure a transport rule as detailed for example here: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/lystavlen/2012/04/10/how-to-prevent-internal-users-from-autoforwaring-mails-to-external-recipients/
