Technically no. I currently don’t have one at my org and been running fine. You just have to edit your proxy addresses attribute via advanced properties in users and computers. This allows you to add extra Aliases etc. far as distro etc. those all stay in cloud so no need to manage them onprem at all and can stay in the cloud only.
ChrisWebbTech yes you can do this but it is an unsupported configuration.
