Unable to Open Office Documents in Microsoft Edge: Always Downloading Instead

Hello community members,

I’m encountering an issue with Microsoft Edge where I am unable to directly view Office documents (such as Word or Excel files) within the browser. File Link looks like this "file://servername/intranet$/text.xlsm". Instead, every time I click on a link to open an Office document, it triggers a download, even though I’ve configured the necessary settings. Here are the steps I’ve taken so far:

  1. Enabled the “IntranetFileLinksEnabled” option.
  2. Enabled the “QuickViewOfficeFilesEnabled” option.
  3. Added the file server to the Intranet Zone.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Any insights into the root cause or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Best regards, Kaj

  • We encountered a misunderstanding regarding the requirement. The client intended to open the document in the Office Application, not in the browser. To fulfill this requirement, I utilized the Edge IE Mode.

    I used the GPO Settings:

    • Configure Internet Explorer integration
    • Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List

  • Kaj__ Hello - My understanding about the QuickViewOfficeFilesEnabled policy is that the files need to be publicly accessible.

I believe the Office viewer is server side and can only process data that the server has access to.  If the document is not accessible through the internet or authentication is required, the file cannot be rendered by the Office web viewer and the file download prompt appears instead.  Thanks!
