Kelly_Y That is great news. Seeing that stable release version 142 is scheduled for late October, if I am correct, we look forward to the backporting to other channels as well. It has a real impact on many of our users and 6 weeks is a while to wait.
As far as testing with Edge Canary, I will see what I can do. The thing is that not all of our users are impacted... I am not for instance. So can you give me insight either here or via email as to how we can best reproduce and test the fix?
jmsoulsby678 These are the steps to reproduce that we were able to collect from customers and used during our investigations.
- Set a website (e.g., https://example.com) in IE mode and as startup URL.
- Launch Edge, let the site begin loading.
- Start typing in the address bar before the page fully loads.
- Observe grey/black bar overlaying the address bar, the div can also appear to be black it is based on the appearance of the browser, grey if light mode is set and black if dark mode is set.
- Issue observed with Google, Bing and Yahoo set to be the search engine in the address bar.

Kelly_Y Great news. I have communicated it within the IT dept and expect to be able to inform you of the resolution from employees that are updated. I'll respond when I have feedback in the coming days.
A huge thankyou for pushing it through to the current stable release v140. - Kelly_YSep 22, 2025

jmsoulsby678 Zedd_Em jsavage-work Hi Everyone! I'm believe the fix is included in Stable v140.0.3485.81. I'm waiting for confirmation from the team but if you update you may see the issue is no longer reproducing. Thanks!

Thanks Kelly_Y Our helpdesk can confirm the above as far as steps. I still cannot reproduce it myself and not all our employees are effected (and they all have version 140).
I conclude that there are other influences causing the issue. A manager recently Windows Updates on his laptop yesterday and after the reboot the issue did not reappear.
I also want to clarify that the grey/black bar overlaying the address bar is sometimes a 'hole' in the Edge browser. You can click through to the application behind the Edge window.
Thanks again for your coordinating efforts. - Zedd_EmSep 19, 2025Copper Contributor
Well described! The only workaround for me so far is to await that page to be loaded, before you start typing in the address bar
