Edge Sync w/ MS 365 Basic and Business Standard
Thank you for posting this! I can confirm too that it's fixed in Dev Branch (v96) and syncing.
I have an active support ticket with MS open as well and showed the support engineer who's going to see if it will be published in the upcoming Beta Release v95 at the end of the month.
Dev Release notes for 10/20 build:
Dev channel update to 96.0.1047.2 is live - Microsoft Tech Community
I believe it might be related to this note:
Changed behavior:
- Fixed an issue where sync doesn’t work for work and school accounts.
I had tried previously on 9/23 with the Dev release and it wasn't working... so this fix is relatively new.
Hmm I tried the dev build and still have the same issue. edge://sync-internals still shows "Microsoft Information Protection service is disabled" -
- mcmikevMar 08, 2022Copper ContributorHello Kelly_Y, I am unable to sync with my business basic subscription and been in contact with support about this. Conclusion is that AIP is necessary for it to work.
So the article is either not correct, the information given by support not correct or the bottom line is that it is not working with just a business basic subscription.
Here is the comment from support i got just now:
"
Hi,
The screenshot I shared is also part of that article. It is located on the latter part. It is a bit confusing but given the additional information on the article as well and with the replication I have done here on my end, AIP really is needed.
For now, you have the option to obtain a free trial of AIP to actually try and see on your end as well if it will work.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
"
So what is true? Should it work, or is AIP needed, but that is not an option for business basic only so I am lost right now.
With an free outlook.com account you an sync, but with an paid business basic subscription it does not work..Why?? how??
Hope there can be an real working answer. Please let me know!! - Kelly_YFeb 16, 2022

Hi Everyone! The issue using Sync with Business Basic accounts has been fixed and the documentation has been updated. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-enterprise-sync#prerequisites
If you are still having issues, please reach out to support and they can work with you individually to try and resolve. Thanks!

Well, just like that it's working! I haven't done anything myself to try and fix the issue.
I saw that I suddenly had an extra icon in my favorites bar which I added on another system. I went to the Edge profile settings on my phone and once I had signed in, I was able to see all my favorites. New favorites were instantly synced to my desktops.
Cool, everything works as expected without breaking a sweat!
It would be nice to get more feedback from Microsoft about this issue though, as I'm guessing there are still users struggling with this. I hope that more of you are lucky, or that on of the previous suggestions can help you.
- J_ZwaanFeb 07, 2022Copper ContributorHi Kelly,
I recently purchased a 365 Business Basic subscription and am also experiencing issues with sync.
Coult you provide us with an update?
Thanks! - madzackJan 29, 2022Copper ContributorHi Kelly,
I have a MS 365 Business Standard and am experiencing the same problem of not being able to sync. But my plan does not allow me to open a Azure Active Directory support ticket without a paid support plan. Is there any update on this?
Thanks,
Mike - deemehtaJan 27, 2022Copper ContributorHello Kelly_Y,
Are there any updates on this yet? The issue has been open for quite a few months now?
Thanks,
Dee - mezzolyNov 22, 2021Copper ContributorYeah got too excited.
Was showing sync on second machine - but wasn't synced.
Performed Reset Sync - which I wasn't able to do before - and now back to error saying Sync Not Supported.
Updated case with Support - mezzolyNov 22, 2021Copper ContributorHi All,
I have sync working now with the latest release:
Summary
Transport State Active
Disable Reasons None
Sync Feature Enabled true
Setup In Progress false
Auth Error OK since browser startup
Sync Account Type AAD
Version Info
Client Version Microsoft Edge Windows 96.0.1054.29
There is an official Bug assigned to my support case now. I have reported back this morning that the sync is working, however, I have noticed a crash with the Sync Node Browser. This doesn't happen with other sync accounts, I have only reproduced with Business Basic.
Still more testing to do, but thought I would let you all know so that you can test as well. - PhilTDevNov 10, 2021Copper Contributor
Kelly_Y When I fill out the support ticket form the Service type doesn't load. This issue occurs as soon as I load the page and persists after entering the Summary and selecting an Issue type. I can try again later but thought I would post this for your reference.
The Service type options were available a couple of days ago when I first tried to submit a support ticket but none of them related to the synchronisation issue.

originaltrini0 Sorry for any confusion! If you have M365 Business Basic you do not need to reach out to support about any sync issues. The team is working on a fix for M365 Business Basic users.
Thanks!

I forgot to bring this up last week.
When I follow the directions you https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/fundamentals/active-directory-troubleshooting-support-howto#open-a-support-ticket to for opening a support ticket, I do not have the "Technical" issue type as stated in step 3. Please see attached screenshot. What should I do in this case?
This is with my M365 basic subscription.
Thanks

Arjan_Sin PhilTDev Hello! Noticed your recent posts, if you have M365 Business Basic there is currently a known issue. The Prerequisites have been updated in the documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-enterprise-sync#prerequisites
If you are having issues with Microsoft Edge Sync and it should work based upon your subscription model, please reach out to Azure Active Directory support. (Find help and open a support ticket - Azure Active Directory | Microsoft Docs) Thank you!

Just to add myself to the list, sync does not work for me.
Also windows account sync itself does not work. Not sure if that is related.Sent feedback as well.
- mezzolyNov 03, 2021Copper ContributorYes - to be clear - I have an open Support Ticket with Microsoft and they updated me yesterday notifying me the article had been updated. I've had the ticket open since 9/23/2021!
Yes - I confirmed too the Beta is not working on: Microsoft Edge
Version 96.0.1054.8 (Official build) beta (64-bit)
I have posted the version above which worked and MS Support has screenshots of my sync working with that version, so hopefully they'll fix things soon.
Yeah you're in the same boat with the rest of us - I was ready to move to DEV since that was working, but realized I have too many profiles to login to - hopefully they'll fix that cross syncing between builds soon too. [along with mobile] - lgs141Nov 03, 2021Copper ContributorI'll keep an eye on the releases though and keep testing as the broken sync is the only thing preventing me from using Edge across desktop and mobile seamlessly 🙂
- lgs141Nov 03, 2021Copper ContributorUnfortunately I tested sync on all three Insider builds last night, and all three of them continue to give the same sync error (Canary version being as new as version 97).
Also FYI the MS article was not updated yesterday, the message about sync being broken for Business Basic has been there since the 26th October. - mezzolyNov 03, 2021Copper ContributorThere is a fix on DEV in OCT v96 (see above)
Oct Beta v95 was pushed to PROD Nov Release
Looks like Beta is at v96 now - that is a 4 week cycle to PROD
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-relnote-beta-channel
I have not confirmed the fix made it from DEV to this BETA
If the fix made BETA, then I would say the next PROD release, around Dec 1 - unless they fix this sooner. - mezzolyNov 03, 2021Copper ContributorSupport reached back to me yesterday and updated the web page. Per our testing, as mentioned above, they have acknowledged the problem and have updated the page:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-enterprise-sync
" Important
* We found a problem with Business Basic for Sync and we’re working on a fix. In the interim, this isn’t working as intended." - lgs141Nov 02, 2021Copper Contributor
The prerequisites article clearly includes Business Basic. There is a world of difference between "doesn't support" and "working on a fix" as the article you linked to states. Clearly, based on the article, this should be working but isn't, which is fine in itself as many things break when it comes to cloud services, but I think that is an important distinction that will save others confusion.
Do you know if there is there any fix on the horizon? This article was last updated 7 days ago.

Hi everyone!
We are continuing to actively investigate but it looks like Business Basic currently doesn't support Microsoft Edge Sync.
