Try this. Not sure how long this registry key will work though. Works as of 7/8/26.
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\Recommended" /v "NewPDFReaderEnabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Still seems to be working as of 7/23, just make sure to restart Edge and completely kill any msedge processes (they like to linger in bg), or just reboot the PC.
The disablement of using the legacy version wasn't supposed to be fully rolled out until Sept 2026... but at least we still got this for now.
