A recent Dev channel update changed the behavior of pinned tabs when using the vertical sidebar. The pinned tabs now display the full title and take up just as much space as un-pinned tabs. Pinned tabs should not be displaying the titles.

I prefer the way it's working now. If you pin the vertical tab pane open, all tabs—including pinned tabs—should display their titles. I rarely pin the vertical tab bar though because it looks so clean in the minimized mode and instantly slides open when you actually need to see titles.
