Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files - Discussion
- Sep 09, 2020
Hello everyone,
Thanks so much for all the feedback provided regarding Open/SaveAs. We are now introducing an option for users using Edge version 87.0.629.0 and above to choose, for each download, whether they want to Open, Save As, Save, or Cancel a download. To enable this option, navigate to edge://settings/downloads and enable, "Ask me what to do with each download." Once you download a file after enabling that setting, you will have the option to Open, Save As, Save, or Cancel it. If you choose to open it directly, it will be downloaded to a temporary folder.
Additionally, we have exposed an option to directly delete downloaded files from your computer, in the browser so that you can easily clean up after downloading your files without leaving the browser.
To learn more about these features, please check out our post.

Hi all.. So I've had two customers today say they can't move from old Edge or google chrome to edge Chromium because the additional check to confirm the running of a potentially harmful file (exe etc) doesn't happen in edge Chromium..

Edge does scan downloaded files.

(Obviously it doesn't generate the exact same message you wrote in your comment but it provides similar options)
it scans, if the file is alright then no prompts, but if it has problems then it will prompt user, then user will go to edge://downloads/all (Edge takes user there) and there will be an option to discard download or run it anyway.
- clicking on the file name above runs it.
- clicking on the URL takes you to the download URL.
- clicking on the "show in folder" opens the download folder where that file resides.
you can view the Demo pages in here, download some files and see for yourself how Edge reacts:

- RobQ_MVPApr 16, 2020Iron ContributorTotally understand how the safe scanning services work, the fact is cyber essentials plus requires the browser to prompt the user whether they wish to run an executable regardless of whether its deemed to be safe or not.... Which new Edge doesn't do...
- WolfIcefangApr 16, 2020Iron ContributorFrom my experience, Google Chrome and Chromium Edge have exceedingly similar security tools - could you post a screenshot of the feature in Google Chrome? I don't quite know what you're referring to. (And I'm no security expert)
