I totally agree with you, I use trackpad for the same reason, I have a lot of work related to (smoothly) zooming in out of PDF's quickly. and I miss this feature on mouse
IMO my suggestion, scroll button press(HOLD) + scroll => should result in a pinch like zoom on the region where mouse is pointer
