Microsoft Edge enterprise sync requirement for Azure Information Protection‎ (AIP)

We've disabled Azure Information Protection (AIP) services, as it is our understanding that the service has been deprecated. The issue we are encountering is that we are now unable to set up Microsoft Edge enterprise sync on any new devices. Is enabling AIP again the only solution for this issue, and what will happen when that service is fully deprecated by Microsoft?
