Have you at any point used the Settings > Reset settings option?

If you type a misspelt word in a text entry field, then right-click on it, do you see the option to Check spelling? Does it help to select that?

If that doesn't help, please check your preferences file. Open edge://prefs-internals in a new tab, then use Find (Ctrl-F in an English installation) to search for editor_proofing_languages. A couple of lines lower down, you should see "enable_spellchecking": true. Do you?

If it reads false, edit the file to change it to true:

    • Close all running instances of Edge.

    • Navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\ in Windows Explorer (change Default to the appropriate folder name for other browser profiles).

    • Find the Preferences file located there, and open it in the text editor of your choice.

    • Search for enable_spellchecking.

    • Manually update its value from "false" to "true".

    • Save and close the file.

    • Reopen Edge and check whether spellcheck is now working correctly.

[Fix courtesy of Scott Low of the Edge team. I hope it's still current; the fact that your seeing the problem suggests that it may be.]

doing reset in Edge does not fix the issue as I mentioned previously.

inside edge://prefs-internals the option "enable_spellchecking" is in "false".

editing manually the Preferences file inside %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\ and changing "enable_spellchecking" to "true" fixed the issue completely.

but now I'm wondering how the file could be with enable_spellchecking value in false if inside Edge settings for spell check it was already enabled (as you can see in the picture above)?

this is strange, a really weird bug xD

and btw, I've just installed Windows 10 in a fresh PC and noticed that the bug is also present in new installs, but only when Edge is updated to the newest version, so maybe the functionally is broken in new version of Edge only or something brokens it when Edge is updated.

        Glad to hear it:)

No, you didn't mention it - that's why I asked!

The act of resetting apparently switches the enable_spellchecking preference to false and also disables the toggle on the Languages settings page. I'm told there's a fix in the works, but no ETA yet.

  • Hey there MELERIX! If you don't mind double checking your settings over at edge://settings/languages, it's possible you have spelling/grammar checks turned off.

Here's my setup, based on having the Editor preview turned on. It's possible you don't have the preview, or that you turned it off and then need to enable to browser spellcheck with another toggle.

If you don't mind pasting a screenshot of your setup here, that'll help identify what might be going wrong!

it's already enabled, even I've added "Español (Chile)" and "Ingles (Estados Unidos)" and is still not working.

Can you try disabling your extensions and confirming if it isn't working on a specific site or all sites?
