Inking on Web Pages - Discussion
dopylop It has been rather obvious that the team has been working on the browser. The only disrespect however is the one I find coming from you. There's no mandate for them to report to you the status of their project - unless you are their project leader. You, just as any customer or non-customer - are on a need to know basis - and until a feature is ready for shipment, you don't need to know. IF however they choose to inform the general public about a certain feature, that is being gratuitous.
If you want full transparency, then you'd be better off changing to a full FOSS product and participate in their development as a part of the team. But when you don't pay for the product, you don't participate in its development, you're not a large shareholder and you're not employed by the company - then your disrespect claims and anger is nothing more than "old man yelling at clouds".

Perhaps so. Interesting you assume I am not a 'large shareholder' -- although your disregard for the interests of small shareholders is, well I'll just say notable. Then again you obviously have disregard for old men too -- another assumption.
MS marketed its surface lineup of products and highlighted this functionality as part of that marketing. By abandoning its efforts in this regard it has become guilty, consciously or not, of a bate and switch campaign. Unless of course it intends to address this in due course.
MS frequently stated its commitment to be a transparent, customer-first company. This is not customer-first. You may find such behaviour acceptable; others certainly do not. Interesting though that you feel compelled to comment. Perhaps it is you 'yelling at clouds'?

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like the new Edge has been installed on my computer. Please tell me I'm missing something.
Otherwise, as I surmised would happen, it seems original Edge is now gone. Which means useful (as with original Edge) inking is now gone, replaced with a pale imitation useful only for pdfs
Now what? Wait 6 months, perhaps a year? Meanwhile, I have a hobbled tablet pc that cannot do one of the most important tasks it once -- as in yesterday -- could do.
I hope I'm wrong. But apparently now my machine is, for my purposes, broken.
I worried Microsoft was going to do a Google on this. So, what can I call this 'temporary' situation. If indeed it is temporary. - AnonymousMay 18, 2020
white_rabbit Ah, a quick point of clarification! What you can't see in that screenshot is that those week counts are for how long it's been since a feature was requested, not how long it will be until it's implemented. And while I still don't know the exact ETA for that feature, I certainly have my fingers crossed that it will be much sooner than 7 months out.

Hi there,
I'm really just whining here, but why is this 28 weeks out
While I have come to accept that Microsoft has decided not to consult with me on all technical roll out decisions, I just really, really, really use inking all the time and am tired of cursing myself when I have the wrong browser open. Is it possible we will see it sooner? Pretty please? - AnonymousMay 08, 2020
dopylop Oh good, I'm glad to hear that was helpful! We're happy to provide insights whenever we can. 🙂

Thank you for the information. I had heard that old Edge was to be replaced by new Edge and figured that may happen without inking. This would have left me in a bad spot and I'm sure others. Knowing that the feature is still planned is satisfying and as much appreciated as it is needed. Until then I hope I can continue to run both versions.
Thanks again.. - AnonymousMay 04, 2020
the_one_thor We appreciate your understanding!
dopylop As you mentioned, transparency is indeed very important to us. And so in that spirit, I will restate our status on the inking functionality: it's planned, but we don't have an ETA to share yet. When giving updates on requested or planned features, we want to keep our community updated, but also don't want to frustrate anyone by giving banal replies when we don't have any news. Instead, we post our https://aka.ms/msedgetopfeedback and release notes every week, where we share feature request statuses and talk about what our devs have been working on.
Here is a screenshot from the Top Feedback, which shows Inking in the "planned" status.
We also welcome folks to check out our https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/whats-new on our Insider website where we spotlight upcoming features. We know that Inking on Webpages is an eagerly awaited feature, so please rest assured that we will definitely be talking about it (in many places) when it officially rolls out.
I hope this demonstrates that we are indeed listening, but we just haven't had any additional news to share yet! And thank you both for respecting our community's Code of Conduct.

Yes, no doubt I was expressing 'irk'. Now that you have seen my concern however perhaps you can seek an MS answer to this? I want to know if these features are coming back or if I will have to (sigh) get an iPad Pro.
If inking in Edge (as it was) is to be abandoned then it is best clearly stated (especially if the original Edge is to be deprecated).
My regards, and apologies, no offence is intended, EricStarker the_one_thor et al... - the_one_thorApr 30, 2020Copper Contributor
EricStarker Thanks for the heads up. Of course you are correct. Sorry for being touchy-feely on the subject.
