HEVC video decoding broken with B-frames
When Edge Chromium playing HEVC video, sometimes video will be similar to stuttering but audio is normal. To find out the cause of the problem, I test to playback many HEVC video, include videos ...

I've read that Edge uses software decoding instead of hardware for HEVC so it all comes to the way the software is implemented

Hmm I always thought that Edge offloads the decoding to the Operating System as I have read that Microsoft does not want to pay for the licensing of HEVC (complicated patent pools). I don't know a lot of Edge and the inner workings of it as I mainly use Edge for HEVC playback (intended to use) so that's interesting to hear.
- HotCakeXMar 21, 2021MVPi think you're right, because he said when he turned off hardware acceleration, everything worked fine.
- GrandDynamoMar 21, 2021Brass ContributorThis sounds like there are problems with his graphics card drivers. But I am a complete beginner on graphics driver issues so I could be wrong.

YouTube doesn't use HEVC as video codec. They use AVC/VP9/AV1 afaik.Yeah exactly,
I'm sure his problem with YouTube stems from something else.

Nah. It happens in all version of Edge including stable. Chrome is fine though. If I turn hardware acceleration off, videos play normally. I normally don't use Can or Dev, so I didn't notice it until Edge Stable updated. I'm on Stable 89.0.774.54
And this whole topic is about video freezing. So yeah, it happens.video freezing only when playing a very specific media file format on the browser from hard disk.
no one here has talked about YouTube video problem.
I'm trying to help you, because it is working on my Edge and everyone else I know in real life. so if you are waiting for something to happen it might never happen and you wait forever (which is not good).
you don't have to be on Canary, i only mentioned it as an example, of course I have Edge stable version 89.0.774.54 (Official build) (64-bit) too, on latest Windows 10 20H2 update.
and this extension from Windows store installed.
btw, what's your GPU?
have you tried disabling all of your extensions? edge://extensions/
maybe one of them is causing an issue.

It causes a problem on every single video on Youtube and videos on other sites as well for me.every single YouTube video...Hmm, I'm using YouTube 24/7, on Edge stable and Edge canary, with HVEC extension installed from Windows store, I don't see any problem.
hardware acceleration is turned on too.
the only way I can reproduce this issue is by dragging a media file from my hard drive over Edge to play it.
I never encountered any error on websites, definitely not YouTube.
YouTube is very popular, if there was something like that wrong with it, I'm sure we would see the forum flooded by posts about it.
maybe something else is wrong there.

if yes, can you give me a link please

- PetarVutovMar 15, 2021Copper ContributorAre there any news on that ? Are they going to fix this stuttering ?

Good to know! Thank you for sharing.
- HotCakeXJan 27, 2021MVPEdge is the only browser besides Safari that supports HEVC.
- HotCakeXJan 27, 2021MVPThat's okay, it's always been a paid extension in Windows store.
- HotCakeXJan 27, 2021MVPThat's good
- DeletedJan 27, 2021Everyone, just to let you know after researching and being informed by a Microsoft Support that Apple Inc owns HEVC license and that really means that Microsoft can't distrubite it free on Edge and only for paid users on the store.

- HotCakeXJan 26, 2021MVPThat error means your Microsoft account is not registered in Windows insider program.
non-insiders can't view insider feedbacks, and Vice Versa. - GrandDynamoJan 26, 2021Brass Contributor
I don't have access to the feedback : (
