Force New Tabs to Background

you're not missing any option, because there is currently none to control that.
you can try other extensions to see how they perform on Edge.
you can also use middle mouse button, hold CTRL while left-clicking on a link, OR right-click and select open in new tab, to keep your focus and don't switch to the newly opened tab automatically.
also you can suggest this feature to be implemented by sending a feedback through Edge browser feedback button or by the shortcuts (Alt + Shift + i)

The old MS browser all allowed this as does pretty much every other browser. It makes scanning a web page like MSN very easy and quick, permitting you to select a number of relevant links very quickly and efficiently without having to constantly shift back to the original tab to continue the process - that is if efficiency means anything to you (not you specifically but the user base in general). I will probably be switching to chrome until this is addressed.
