- jgarwackiCopper ContributorNew build 115.0.1880.1 downloaded and installed. Now Edge crashes about 10 sec after launching. I can't keep it running long enough to see why it's crashing. Rebooting didn't seem to help.
- agpt8Brass Contributor
While it does not crash for me, it just does not render anything. All I am getting is a large completely black window with absolutely nothing inside and nothing clickable! Switching workspaces from the taskbar shortcuts does not do anything. No way to send feedback as well. Using stable until a fix is available.
Update: I tried a hard reinstall for both consumer and business versions, still facing the same issue.
- impasseCopper Contributor
same thing happening to me..how does a bug this bad make it to dev? le sigh.. BIG thank you abdelfattah for the downgrade instructions!
- Paul_VCSteel Contributor
Same here, crashes to a completely black window and after some seconds it show a background wallpaper video (a video of Mount Fuji, this morning) with a black band on top.
Furthermore, Edge Dev "Uninstall" (via Windows/Settings/Add or remove programs) does not work. Nor does "Modify". And Edge Dev Uninstall via the Control Panel/Programs and Features does not work either.
- fredh250Copper ContributorI have the same issue
- abdelfattahIron Contributor
Something is very wrong, it crashes about ~10 seconds after launching. I can't even get to Send Feedback quickly enough to let you know why, or figure out what's causing it myself. Rolling back to 115.0.1866.1 immediately fixed whatever the issue is.
You all really don't make it easy to roll Edge back at all, do you? Had to install a Group Policy (single machine, no domain) that I doubt will actually work to prevent it from updating until the next version rolls around, and run the MSI from an elevated prompt...
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/business/download?form=MA13FJ
From an elevated command prompt or PowerShell window:
msiexec /I .\MicrosoftEdgeDevEnterpriseX64.msi ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1
Now all is well.
- abdelfattahIron Contributor
"Now all is well"
No it isn't, lol
- Paul_VCSteel Contributor
Your rollback instructions are for the Edge Dev Business version. How can we roll back the Consumer version?
- abdelfattahIron Contributor
Paul_VC no they're not, I have the "Consumer" version installed. The only way to get a "version specific" installer for Edge is from the Business site. Afterwards, you'll have to Win+R, services.msc, and then disable these two to keep it from updating itself to an unusable version.
Also if you open any edge:// URLs like Settings, be prepared for a bunch of UAC prompts to nag you as it attempts to oh my god I need to update myself nownownownow.
I'm this close to setting up a domain controller in a VM just so I can join AD and disable Edge updates...
- BrianInIACopper ContributorI finally got this method to work.
and then the update to 1880.1 is now working without error.
Not sure what changed on Microsoft side but its working going this route.
Thanks

Just found the problem that makes the window completely blank, which is the flag "Enhance text contrast".
If you have this problem, you can create a shortcut and add ' --no-experiments' to the end of the path in the target field, and you can open Edge with no problem with the shortcut.
Afterwards, you can disable that "Enhance text contrast" flag from edge://flags/, and then everything should be back to normal now.- Paul_VCSteel Contributor
tonyzxcv Your workaround was helpful. Thank you.
Steps to apply the workaround:
- Locate the Edge Dev app, via File Explorer.
- Create a shortcut to it, on the Desktop.
- Right-click the shortcut, select Properties.
- In Properties, go to Shortcut tab.
- At the end of the Target field, add " --no-experiments".
- Click OK button to close Properties.
- Open the Shortcut: Edge Dev will open normally.
- Go to edge://flags/#edge-enhance-text-contrast
- Set this flag to "Disabled".
- Restart Edge Dev.
- RobertJelenCopper Contributornot working 😞
- agpt8Brass ContributorYup, turning this off fixed it for me. I ran edge through the terminal with the '--no-experiments' flag and the UI came back, though my rounded tabs disappeared. No amount of fiddling seems to turn it back on. Turned off the Enhanced text contrast flag as well. Hoping for a permanent fix soon.
- yokoffingCopper ContributorTHANK YOU!!!
- IndexingCopper Contributorso small, but I like the rounded tabs better but the new update seemed to remove them
- SWCetaceanCopper ContributorOn one of my laptops, I'm also getting the black screen problem. This is an older laptop with both Intel integrated graphics and an Nvidia P500. Neither of the GPU options work; both give me a black screen. The --disable-gpu and the --no-experiments command line options don't work either and I get a black screen either way. The "Uninstall" option in the Settings app and Control Panel doesn't work, because the Edge uninstaller uses Edge, which cannot render the window. Where is the settings file stored? That's the only way I can see to disable the offending flag, because the command line options just don't work.
This black screen problem was reported in Canary last week and was never truly fixed. Whatever experiment with GPU acceleration is being done here needs a rework, because it's clearly breaking installs without effective workarounds. - Jeremiah-VIron Contributor
Update: Our engineers are currently investigating the problem regarding Dev/Canary not rendering properly or crashing. A fix has been implemented and it appears to have resolved the issue for some users. However, we understand that there are still individuals encountering this problem. If the current workaround provided here is not effective for you, please follow these steps:
- Close all instances of "msedge.exe" by killing the processes.
- Add the following command line argument to the "msedge.exe" executable: "msedge.exe --disable-features=msEnhancedTextContrast".
- Launch the browser again.
- In the address bar, enter "edge://flags/#edge-enhance-text-contrast".
- Select either "default" or "disable".
- dany20mhCopper Contributor
The issue I have with edge-enhance-text-contrast is that Hardware Acceleration is on.
I can have that flag set to enable and disable my hardware acceleration and everything works fine.
But the moment I enable hardware acceleration it will stop working and get a black screen.
Might want to pass this info on to the engineering team as well too.
- BrianInIACopper Contributor
I have added --disable-features=msEnhancedTextContrast to the target in the short cut.
Now I face just having a Blank Black Screen when opening Edge DEV.
- RobertJelenCopper Contributor
Hi Jeremiah-V,
the --disable-features=msEnhancedTextContrast didn§t work in my case. So I used it with --disable-gpu and Edge works. But strange is that EDGE works now without any additional startup parameters.
- Thomas AmosCopper Contributor
Crashes on launch with me as well.
- MZ1231220Copper ContributorNo rounded tab corners, sad : (
- AliHamiehCopper ContributorHey,
I've had the same issue upon updating. But you can re-enable it using edge://flags by searching for the "Rounded tabs" and changing the setting from default to enabled. Edge will prompt you to a restart and the appearance is applied automatically.
I hope this helps!- FivvesCopper ContributorFor SOME weird reason, rounded tabs is a deal breaker for me. This was very helpful to know, thank you!!!!
- RigidDesignCopper ContributorSame issue. Crashes within seconds
- RigidDesignCopper ContributorJust an FYI for others, if you uninstall it and reinstall it fresh it seems to run fine:
Microsoft Edge
Version 115.0.1880.1 (Official build) dev (64-bit)
Microsoft Edge is up to date.- Paul_VCSteel Contributor
Trouble is, Edge Dev "Uninstall" (via Windows/Settings/Add or remove programs) does not work. Nor does "Modify".
Furthermore, Edge Dev Uninstall via "Control Panel/Programs and Features" does not work either. It simply hangs, with the Edge Dev icon showing on the Taskbar and nothing else happening.
