Dev channel update to 101.0.1198.0 is live

Hello Insiders!  Today we’re releasing build 101.0.1198.0 to the Dev channel.  Our big news today is that we’ve officially announced our support for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck!  Right now, this support requires Edge Beta, and the steps to get it all set up are available here:  https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftEdge/comments/th77w9/microsoft_edge_beta_the_browser_for_xbox_cloud/.  Not a Reddit user?  We’ve also got a support article here:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/xbox-cloud-gaming-in-microsoft-edge-with-steam-deck-43dd011b-0ce8-4810-8302-965be6d53296

In case you missed it in the last update, we’ve launched a GitHub repo for feedback about the F12 Dev Tools.  Also, you may have noticed a tile on the update Welcome page about auto-generated image labels recently.  Today, we’ve got a blog post going into more detail about that feature:  https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2022/03/17/appears-to-say-microsoft-edge-auto-generated-image-labels/.  As for everything that’s new and noteworthy this week:

  • Enabled by default the ability to view PDF properties and metadata.
  • Added info to the Edge Bar about the current URL.
  • Management policies (note that updates to documentation and administrative templates may not have occurred yet):
    • Added a policy to control if Kiosk Swipe Gestures are Enabled, which controls if swipe gestures to navigate forward and back are functional in Kiosk mode.
    • Added a policy to Configure Keyboard Shortcuts, which configures which keyboard shortcuts are disabled.
    • Added a policy to control if the Microsoft Office Menu is Enabled.
    • Added a policy in Internet Explorer Mode to Enable Save page As, which has previously been disabled in IE mode tabs.
    • Added support on Mac for the policy to set the Auto Update Check Period in Minutes.
  • Developer (note that updates to documentation and SDKs may not have occurred yet):
    • Added an API to WebView2 for initial support for multiple profiles.  Note that this API was previously in the “Experimental” status.
    • Added an API to WebView2 to set the default download location.  Note that this API was previously in the “Experimental” status.
    • Added an experimental API to WebView2 to verify or block a certificate from the server when an error is detected.

Known issues:

  • Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on YouTube.  As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed.  See this help article for more details.
  • Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error.  The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
  • Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load.  This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
  • Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other.  Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices.  This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.

It's hard to believe, but because of the delays we had in the last couple of weeks, next week is already our last scheduled release or two for version 101!
