Default Search Engine Automatic Change

An Edge update should not normally reset a user-selected search engine. If it happens repeatedly, the usual causes are an applied policy, an extension, synchronization from another profile, or damaged profile settings.

Try these checks:

1. Open edge://settings/search, set the preferred search engine, and make sure Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar is set to Address bar. The New Tab page’s search box may still use Bing unless searches are redirected to the address bar.
2. Open edge://policy and look for policies beginning with DefaultSearchProvider. If any are listed, they may be forcing Bing. On a managed computer, the administrator must change the policy.
3. Open edge://extensions and temporarily disable search, new-tab, coupon, antivirus or privacy extensions.
4. Temporarily turn off Edge settings synchronization and test again. Another signed-in device or profile may be restoring the old setting.
5. If no policy or extension is responsible, create a new Edge profile and test it through the next update. If the new profile keeps the setting, the original profile is likely damaged.

Also check edge://version to confirm whether this is Stable, Beta, Dev or Canary. Insider channels update frequently and may occasionally contain regressions. Switching to Chrome should not be necessary solely to keep a custom search engine; if a clean profile is also reset after an update and no policy is shown, report the exact Edge version because that would indicate an Edge bug.
