BUG: M1 Mac Edge Beta hard crash, VTDecoderXPCService high memory usage
Issue:
MS Edge Beta Version: Version 90.0.810.1 (Official build) Dev (64-bit)
Playing videos in MS Edge Beta on an M1 Mac crashes the machine. I tried a few different videos and this seems to be easy to reproduce on my machine.
Steps to repro:
- Open Activity Monitor
- Click on the Memory tab
- Goto to this link: Aliens: Fireteam Squads Up in 25 Minute PS5, PS4 Gameplay Demo - Push Square
- Play the video
- Watch for VTDecoderXPCService memory grow
- Computer crashes after a few minutes
Result:
Hard crash. Have to force reboot the computer
Work around:
Use the current stable version of MS Edge: Version 89.0.774.45 (Official build) (64-bit)
Computer details:
- Big Sur Version: 11.2.2
- Model Name: MacBook Pro
- Model Identifier: MacBookPro17,1
- Chip: Apple M1
- Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
- Memory: 8 GB
- System Firmware Version: 6723.81.1
Enclosed:
Screen capture of VTDecoderXPCService process growing in memory size as the video plays
Available to help troubleshoot and/or reproduce for you.
Thanks!
- sausagesCopper ContributorThis occurs on my M1 MBA as well, though the machine does not entire crash. Rather, the VTDecoder process is restarted by MacOS which momentarily interrupts the video playback and I get an "out of memory" notification from the OS. This cycle then continuously repeats as video playback continues.
