Better fullscreen support on touch screen devices (including Surface!)
I've been looking at replacing my aging Surface Book with a Surface Pro X. After seeing virtually no progress making "Edge Chromium" Surface friendly I'm seriously considering whether an iPad Pro might be a smarter choice.
I don't mean to rant, but I do feel somewhat abandoned.

Progress? What progress? I only hope "Real Edge" continues to get updates.

Looks like there are some confusions here, Ipad and Surface are devices, Edge and Safari are browsers.
- The new Edge is "new", meaning it still needs more time to be complete, one of the areas that need work is the touch experience.
- the classic/legacy Edge is still here, it's not removed, but it will not receive any more updates either.
- my suggestion is to uninstall Edge stable (version 79), restart your device and then legacy Edge will come again. then install Edge canary (version 81) and use it side by side with Edge legacy until the new Edge is ready and has all the features you need. the reason I said to use canary is that it has the most recent features and it also has the quickest update cycle.
- There are lots of browsers for Windows, if one doesn't work, you always have other options.

Thanks for your reply HotCakeX
Your suggestion is what I've been doing for the last few months.
To be clear what my concern is that Microsoft is NOT showing any love for customers, like myself, who have sent quite a lot of money to Microsoft in the form of purchasing premium hybrid devices. The browser is an integral feature of those devices and Microsoft has more or less abandoned the only browser "Real Edge" that fully supports these devices.
Now that they're no longer improving "Real Edge" (which needs compatibility improvements). The features that made Edge so great on Surface should be at the top of the list when prioritizing work on "New Edge" (and seriously, what's up with all this name recycling? first onenote, now this).
And let's be clear the issues with touch and swipe gestures where raised months ago and have gotten near zero attention while features are being added constantly.
Feeling lack of support from Microsoft, I'm sure I'm not alone in contemplating whether I might get a better long term experience from another vendor. Apple probably does not address my needs , but I have delayed the purchase of a new device because of this.

You're welcome,
well if you or me or anyone else buys something, it's not because we love a company, it's because we NEED that device or software so we go on and pay for it. you could pirate a software too but then you will have to deal with its legal aspects.
so I think in business and personal needs, "love" is irrelevant.
I don't love Apple as a company for various reasons, neither do I love Google, but sometimes I NEED and HAVE TO use their services/products and I am FORCED to pay money for it, because If i don't, I will be a criminal. simple as that.I don't think anyone loves to pay money to a company, specially the big multinational companies, I think what everyone loves to do is to get things for free.
Also there is no "real Edge", Microsoft Edge browser got replaced and this is the new one based on Chromium, both of them are real and official.- stevecuFeb 03, 2020Brass Contributor
I think you may have misunderstood my use of the term "love".
I don't love Microsoft, and I don't love Apple.
I prefer using Microsoft products over some other companies because; I think they are better products (both software and hardware) than most of the alternative (especially the Surface line), Microsoft is less evil than some other companies (who make money buy selling information gathered through "free" services), Microsoft products are generally a better value than say Apple.
What I meant was that as a customer who has purchased expensive hardware from Microsoft "I'm not feeling the love" when they arbitrarily replace the the browser experience on that device with one that works less well.
I'm well aware that I can continue to use the original browser and I do. But part of the equation with Surface and Edge was that while it was imperfect, it would continue to improve over time. Now it won't.
I don't argue with their decision to change the rendering engine to achieve compatibility. What I disagree with is their decision to drop development of what they want me to now call "Legacy Edge" before "New Edge" achieved essential feature parity with it. From where I sit they aren't even working on it. It's very frustrating.
I use new Edge as a replacement for Chrome, because I'm uncomfortable with google in general, but I have to use some web apps for work that don't work with Legacy Edge.
I'm waiting for the singularity - when I can stop having 2 browsers installed, without losing essential functionality.
I'm not sure how piracy enters into the conversation.
I appreciate your comments, and assistance in bringing some visibility to this issue. It's an important issue, and one that is under-discussed I guess because a lot of Surface users are under-using there devices or have not yet installed the new Edge.
