AVIF image format not available in Edge 116+.

AVIF image format can be enabled via the --enable-features=msEdgeAVIF runtime flag in Edge 115. But it not available on Edge116+.

I tested the:

Stable 116.0.1938.62

Beta 117.0.2045.12

Development 118.0.2060.1

Canary 118.0.2072.0

None of them support turning on AVIF image format support with --enable-features=msEdgeAVIF runtime flag.

But Edge Stable 115 can do it.

Is this a bug or what?And what should I do?

    Hi xiaoyaoyao 

     

    Someone who works at Microsoft may-need to answer you here, but on a website called "caniuse" it says for AVIF in Edge 116 or later it requires your PC to have "Windows 11 (Moment 3 or Later)".

     

    If your PC has Windows 11, type WINVER into the search-box, then click on the "WINVER" app it should suggest.  After the "OS Build" text, make sure it says "22621.1778" or higher.  If so, you have the "Moment 3" update installed.  If not, use "Windows Update" in the Settings app to update that PC.

     

    If your PC has Windows 10, I'm not-sure what the support for AVIF there would be?

     

    On a site called "Stack Overflow", it sounds like due to an ongoing licencing-issue, Microsoft have pulled the AVIF support on the 27th of this month.

      My system is Windows 11 Pro for Workstations 22H2 Beta Preview 22631.2262.

       

      I don't think there is a licensing-issue because the AVIF image format is an open, royalty-free image file format specification for storing images or image sequences compressed with AV1 in the HEIF container format.


      The developer of the AVIF image format is Alliance for Open Media.The governing members of the Alliance for Open Media are Amazon, Apple, ARM, Cisco, Facebook, Google, Huawei, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, Nvidia, Samsung Electronics and Tencent.

       

      In August 2020, Google Chrome version 85 was released with full AVIF support. Google Chrome 89 for Android adds AVIF support.
      In October 2021, Mozilla Firefox 93 was released with default AVIF support.
      WebKit added AVIF support on March 5, 2021. Safari for iOS 16 and macOS Ventura added support for AVIF; iOS 16 was released on September 12, 2022 and macOS Ventura on October 24, 2022. Safari 16.4 retroactively added AVIF support for macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur.

       

      So I was hoping to get a response from a Microsoft employee.
