How to preserve document format and structure with Copilot Agent
The main limitation is that Copilot Studio is not currently a lossless Word document editor. It can generate revised content, but it cannot reliably reconstruct every style, section, header, table, and layout element from an arbitrary uploaded document.
The closest native approach is Document output in Prompt Builder, currently in preview. You provide a Word template with placeholders, and the agent fills those placeholders while retaining the predefined layout. That works for standardized documents, but not for unrestricted “upload any document, edit it, and return an identical copy” scenarios.
So the scalable pattern is: Copilot handles the content changes, while a controlled Word template handles the formatting. For true in-place editing, Edit with Copilot in Word is a better fit than Copilot Studio, subject to licensing and rollout availability.
