Excel file
Hi, I would like to be able to open and edit a personal, confidential, excel file from my PC to a laptop, right now I cannot open that copied file on my laptop?
Do not want to use One Drive.
Thank You.

Hi,
This usually happens when the file is stored or copied in a way that breaks trust/permission settings between devices.
A few things you can check:
- Make sure the file isn’t “blocked” (Right-click → Properties → Unblock)
- Try copying it again using a USB drive instead of sync tools
- Check if the file is in a protected folder on the laptop (permissions issue)
- Confirm the Excel version compatibility between PC and laptop
If it still won’t open, it may help to test by saving it as a new .xlsx file on your PC before transferring.

Hi, thank you for the reply.
I actually named as a new file and it worked.

Was a sensitivity label applied? If so you will need to use an account that was granted permission s when the label was applied

Hey! This is actually pretty easy to fix. A few things could be causing this:
1. The file might be "read-only" because of how it was copied. Right-click the file on your laptop, go to Properties, and uncheck the Read-only box at the bottom.
2. If it's password protected, you'll need the same password you set on your PC.
3. Try copying via USB drive instead of whatever method you're using now sometimes network copying adds weird permission locks.
4. If Excel on your laptop is a different version, just click "Enable Editing" when it opens.
Quickest fix: right click the file, Properties, uncheck Read-only, hit Apply. That solves it 90% of the time!
