Memory leak in Microsoft Remote Desktop client

I've been running into an issue with screen re-draws on both Windows 10 and 11 RDP sessions.  I happened to check the memory usage of the Microsoft Remote Desktop client on my local PC and it was over 2GB.  Once I kill it and go back in, everything is fine for a few hours.

How do we get support for this client?  It's the one you download from Microsoft directly, not from the Windows Store.

This isn't an AVD related issue, but I haven't been able to find any support section for the client.

Kidd_Ip Not sure which version you're referring to, but my windows 11 machine is up to date, the RDP client is 10.0.22, hyper-v manager is 10.0.22621.1.

I inadvertently posted this in the Azure channel (wasn't looking closely enough, apologies), but this issue isn't azure specific.  I'm not using azure.  It's definitely a memory-leak in RDP, and it affects both normal RDP, and hyper-V sessions (which is RDP under the hood).

I have 3 large monitors (not sure if that matters), and when I stream video to an RDP session (as an example of high data throughput), I can see the consumed memory on the host increasing, and it is not ever released until the RDP session is terminated.  If I don't terminate the session and restart, it will consume memory till OS failure and I have to hard reboot.

Finally isolated the issue.  I was running my Lenovo Legion in Dynamic graphics mode (bios setting).  By setting it to dedicated GPU (discrete mode), the memory leak disappeared.

  • PeteMitchell Same here.  Have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting periodically.  The leak is most pronounced when streaming video into the RDP session.  I'm using RDP to visor into my HyperV session on the same machine
