Azure Virtual Desktop - Black Screens on logins - What we've tried so far
No black screens today, such a relief. But Outlook/Onedrive issues for maybe 5 users out of 50. I’m not sure what fixes it, seems to be different things fix different users. No single fix has worked. I’m at the stage that I might re-build their windows profiles as it’s the same handful of people experiencing it. Not everyone. I’d like to get this resolved without having to rebuild the hosts from an image as we’ve a lot of custom software and fixes which we’ll have to re-install, god knows if I have them all documented🫣
However for one host pool today, users had Outlook and OneDrive connection issues even after installing KB5045594 (although no more black screen). Installed latest version of FSlogix but didn't help. I ended up uninstalling KB5046400 and KB5044029 and after a reboot no one had Outlook or OneDrive connection issues anymore. Can't say for sure which of those KB's was causing the issue, maybe host just needed another reboot?! but that's another host pool working again.. until MS breaks it again.
- chrismagaOct 25, 2024Copper ContributorDid the same with one affected user and host. After installing KB5045594, reboot, then remove KB5044029 & KB5046400, reboot, the black screen was gone and Outlook, Onedrive and Teams started immediately. Looks good for now and will do this on all hosts in the host pool and then we will see next week if the workaround will do good.
- Digital_UppercutAOct 28, 2024Copper ContributorEveryone pls help. We installed KIR in September and were fine every since. Today no one can open Outlook as its is not connecting. Everything else works. Help pls. Can't get Outlook going.

Digital_UppercutA Have you installed the October CU Preview (KB5045594)? If so and still an issue then check if the affected host(s) have any MS updates installed in September or October? If there are, uninstall them (especially KB5046400 and KB5044029) and pause updates. That's been the 'fix' in my experience with black screens and MS apps (mainly Outlook and OneDrive) not connecting, just using the KIR was not enough.
- allankchambersOct 25, 2024Copper ContributorSo what we are tying, as we noticed the Oct Preview patch doesn't 100% seem to resolve this issue if the host was on Sept/Oct patch prior, was to deploy a Host with Aug patch level and then patch straight to Oct Preview patch....
So far in early testing we don't have the issue of Black Screen + APPx + Office issues.
But we only have a very small selection of users testing this approach. We bit afraid to test with any more live users incase we make things worst again.
How our environment is currently working today is we had to re-deployed all our VDI's with only Aug Patch level and disable windows updates.
We have a ticket opened with MS and they now say the Oct(d) Preview patch should resolve this issue, however we know this doesn't fix the issue for VDI's that was already been corrupted with the Sept(b)/Oct(b).- YarfunkleOct 25, 2024Copper ContributorAfter seeing everyone discuss the continued issues even after installing Oct patches, I rebuilt my host pools with W11 24H2 and it's night and day. No more black screens, appx issues, or O365 auth issues. We didn't have to rebuild user profiles, just rebuilt the image and all our problems went away. Extremely poor QA and customer support from Microsoft on this. It's completely unacceptable that this issue is going on 2 months with no resolution or official acknowledgement of the issue. Plenty of companies out there are using this issue combined with the recent AVD outages to migrate to other solutions.
