Why is Compliance Assessment always 'in progress'?
Hi,
I have 3 different Azure Tenant environments, and have access to a few client environments. In each of them, we have triggered a MS Purview Compliance Assessment - using all the different and available Assessments (e.g. Data Protection Baseline, NIST, country specific, etc).
Some of these we kicked off in November 2024, and now in Feb 2025, all these assessments are all showing as "in progress" and most of them are 51% or 52% complete.
These are always showing as 'in progress' and never at 100% complete....in all the environments I have access to.
What is the explanation for this please?
Thank you,
SK

Hey ShimKwan,
The reason the Compliance Assessments are showing as "in progress" and not reaching 100% is that these assessments are ongoing processes. They evaluate a continuous stream of data and settings, so it takes time for them to finish. Even if they show 51% or 52%, it means they're still working on evaluating the entire environment.
There isn’t always a clear endpoint, especially if the assessment includes dynamic or regularly changing data. This is normal and expected behavior for such compliance checks.
In my experience it could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months
So, it's really about how much data and how many configurations need to be assessed over time.
Hope this helps!

Hi luchete
Thank you for your reply.
I can see that it might take a while for the Compliance assessment to run in a fully populated production tenant - however, I have a few different out-of-the-box clean greenfield Test Tenants, without any data, config, etc...its a brand new tenant....and Compliance Manager is still showing "in progress" and "51%" complete, with some assessment kicked off in November 2024...its now Feb 2025.
Cheers.

Even in a clean tenant it might still be processing baseline settings or checking rules that take a while. Sometimes system updates can also cause delays.
Since it’s been this long, you might want to refresh the assessment or check for any issues.
For that go into the Compliance Portal and going to the Compliance Manager. Once there, select the specific assessment you want to refresh. In the assessment details page, look for an option to either “Refresh” or “Re-run” the assessment. After refreshing, you can monitor the progress to see if it moves beyond the 51% mark. If there’s no refresh option or the assessment still seems stuck, it might be worth checking for any ongoing system issues or errors causing the delay.
Also if an assessment or improvement action shows as "In progress" for an extended period, it could indicate that the necessary actions are still pending or that the system is still processing the compliance status. This status means the device or organization is not fully compliant but is within the grace period defined by the administrator.
To address this issue, ensure that all required actions are being completed and that there are no delays in implementing the necessary controls. Regularly review the progress of improvement actions and, again, update the status accordingly.
If the issue persists, it may be helpful to check if there are any errors or if additional information needs to be provided to complete the assessment.
Do you have the exact same assessments finished/completed in any of your tenants?
