    Hi johnjohn-Peter,

When a retention policy is applied, even if a document is deleted from both recycle bins, it’s still retained in a hidden location in the system for the duration of the policy. For example, if it's set to keep documents for 10 years, the file will be kept but inaccessible to users until the retention period ends.

Regarding custom metadata or permissions, these will be preserved with the document. The metadata, such as Managed Metadata or Choice fields, will remain intact, and the permissions will be kept as they were when the document was originally created or modified.

And, yes, retention policies allow you to restore the retained files to their original locations if needed.

    Hope that helps!

    Regards!
