Unified Catalog activity / usage reporting
Hi,
We are building out our data products and glossary terms in Purivews Data Governance Unified catalog. I’d like to get some metrics on data consumer activity/usage. Metrics like how many users running searches for terms or data products. How many people navigating into data assets to discover data, etc. I haven’t found any reports like this. Is there any audit logs specific to data governance I can query? I’m trying to gauge user adoption.
thanks

Microsoft Purview supports tracking data consumer activity and user adoption within the Data Governance Unified Catalog. The focus is Purview Data Governance prioritizes governance enablement, not consumer analytics thus the metrics are treated as telemetry and not reporting.
The expectation is to use more granular and user-specific insights which may require audit logs, diagnostic logs or analytics exports.
Below are the few available options which you can use.
Usage Monitoring (Preview) provides native visibility into data product adoption, including views, click‑through activity, access requests, and repeat usage patterns. This is useful for understanding which data products are actively consumed versus those with low engagement.
You can find this at Purview Portal → Settings → Unified Catalog → Usage Monitoring (Preview)
Export to Azure Data Lake enables exporting governance metadata and activity data for advanced analysis. This approach is recommended for building custom dashboards that show adoption trends across domains, data products, assets, and glossary terms.
Microsoft Purview Audit Logs capture user interactions such as catalog searches, asset views, and glossary usage. These logs support compliance and investigation use cases, with retention depending on licensing.
You can implement this at Purview Portal → Audit solution
Diagnostic Logs provide the most granular visibility, allowing detailed tracking of catalog and data map activity and integration with SIEM or Log Analytics for advanced monitoring.
You can implement this at Azure Portal → Purview Account → Monitoring → Diagnostic Settings
For more custom and centralised approach, utilise PowerBI and Log analytics/ Sentinel SIEM to for all security and audit teams
