Retention policy for Teams chat not working

You need to verify two key factors before concluding why deletion isn’t happening:
- Conflicting Retention Policies
Check if the user is subject to any other retention policy that conflicts with the one you shared. If another policy is configured to retain content for a longer duration, that policy will take precedence, and deletion will not occur. - Litigation or eDiscovery Hold
Confirm whether the user’s mailbox or content is under a litigation hold or eDiscovery hold. If either is active, items cannot be deleted until the hold is removed.
Example:
If your policy is set to delete items after 30 days, but another retention policy retains them for 90 days, the 90-day policy will apply, and deletion will be skipped.
