Creating users without mailbox
Hi all,
I want to create users without creating a mailbox and instead using an existing mail address. It is possible by guest users.
But my users should be real users but from different domains. All of them have already their mailbox.
Is this possible?
Or can I activate a forwarder rule to their real mailbox by creating the user?
Hi FlorianKurrle,
Ok, so you have an OnPrem Domain and an AAD Domain.
The AAD Domain is named *.onmicrosoft.com, right?
No Custom Domain entered. No AD Connect build up.
With this, you will not be able to enter the OnPrem Domain Mail Address to the AAD User. The Mail Address that is entered needs a Custom registered Domain, that is what you don't have. So all your users would only be able to use a *.onmicrosoft.com Mail Address.
Kind Regards, Peter

Hi FlorianKurrle,
Do we speak about Guest Users or AAD Users?
When it is about Guest Users, you do not need to create a Mailbox, as they are guests and also maybe don't need a license, so they alöso don't get a Mailbox created.
When it is about AAD Users, created on your tenants AAD, you can exclude the Exchange Online Plan, when assigning them a license, so they won't also get a Mailbox.
You can also create a Contact mailto:mike.myers@friday.com, as friday.com is your tenant, and let this one forward to the original mail address mailto:mike.myers@saturday.com.
Hope this helps, otherwise please provide some more informations about the scenario and case.
Thanks & Regards,
Peter

That is already great! It is about normal AAD users.
1) If I do not assign the Exchange license, can I assign a then a normal mail address to a normal user like mailto:mike@hotmail.com ?
2) If I already assigned an Exchange license, can I undo that with the target that they can user their normal email-address which is in the same domain like the tenant but local exchange?
3) I have found the page where the email forwarding is described: https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/microsoft-365/admin/email/configure-email-forwarding?view=o365-worldwide (for your interest)

Hi FlorianKurrle,
You can not add another Mail Address to the user in your tenant as this mail domain etc. is not known.
where comes the user from? OnPrem? Other Azure AD? Somewhere he needs to exist. And there he has it's mailbox, right?
Just make use of the User as a Guest User and leav mailbox management and so on where the user is orginally located..
I'm still not 100% clear why to put a user there and give him a M365 License.
