Azure AD vs. Windows Server AD

Our Domain Controller and all other servers are currently running Windows Server 2016. We also, use Office 365 for Outlook, SharePoint, PowerApps, etc. I have been reading on line about Azure AD, but need a little more insight from some more experienced Azure users. Is Azure something we should be using? It doesn't look like a replacement for Server AD. Thanks for any clarification, I appreciate it.
