Operating system not currently figured to run this application

My desktop was placed into service 08/04/2014.  It recently stopped opening all MicroSoft programs. 

I get the same error message. Operating system not currently figured to run this application.

 

Is there hope to revive this old gal, or should I purchase a new unit?

    Which operating system is installed? Which version of Office is installed? Context and details are useful in attempting to think about problems of this sort.

    Well, I'm working on a 12 year old PC running Windows 10 & Office 365 & its still running fine.

    In your case, do you really mean ALL Microsoft programs?
    Does Windows run correctly?
    Can you open Notepad or other basic Windows apps? What about any of the Office apps?
    for those that don't run, does anything happen e.g. error message?
