Why on earth was Microsoft even messing around with something which is (frankly) obsolete and has been stable for literally decades?

If you have mission critical software, you should not be on Current channel. Let others deal with the bugs, while you sit pretty on Monthly or Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
