Save money now – lower built-in support fee, free tier, cheaper paid tiers, use your own subscription, and JBoss EAP 8.

We are very happy to share a number of exciting updates for JBoss EAP on App Service, including a 60%+ license fee price reduction for Pay-As-You-Go plans, Memory Optimized SKUs, a free tier for a lower barrier to entry, the availability of JBoss EAP 8, and a soon to be released ability to Bring-Your-Own-Subscription (also known as Bring-Your-Own-License or BYOL) for JBoss EAP on the App Service platform.

JBoss EAP on App Service is a jointly developed and supported managed solution from Red Hat and Microsoft for running enterprise Java applications. It is a key component in enabling Java workloads on Azure.

The reduced pricing, free and expanded SKU offerings, and BYOL make JBoss EAP on App Service more accessible and economical than ever. JBoss EAP customers can now take advantage of the App Service PaaS platform to deploy apps without any associated infrastructure management or maintenance. Save time and money by running JBoss EAP applications on the App Service platform.

Julia Liuson, President of Microsoft Developer Division and GitHub, said the following about these vital changes:

"Microsoft is very pleased to continue collaborating with Red Hat to make running JBoss EAP on Azure as cost-effective as possible, including on VMs, OpenShift, and App Service. For App Service, we have now reduced the built-in licensing fee by more than 60%, created a free tier for trials, and added cheaper paid tiers. Soon, customers will be able to apply their volume licenses purchased directly from Red Hat. These changes are enabling our joint Java customers to realize greater value on Microsoft Azure."

License Price Reduction

Across all available SKUs, built-in JBoss EAP pay-as-you-go license prices have been reduced by more than 60%! This change aligns the price of using JBoss EAP on App Service with the pricing for JBoss EAP on Azure generally, including on VMs. There is no action required for existing customers as the updated billing has already been enabled for all available platform SKUs. You will simply get a lower bill going forward.

Note that JBoss EAP 7 is approaching extended life cycle support (ELS). Once extended life cycle support kicks in, the license and support fees that will be billed as part of the pay-as-you-go plans on App Service will double. These increased fees can be avoided by upgrading to JBoss EAP 8. The same increase when extended life cycle support kicks in for JBoss EAP 7 will happen across all JBoss EAP on Azure offers including on VMs.

Additional SKUs

Additional paid SKUs are also now available for JBoss EAP on App Service including the full range of memory optimized SKUs (P*MV3). This allows JBoss EAP customers on the platform to deploy and scale memory intensive applications at a lower cost than previously possible using only standard premium (PV3) or isolated SKUs. You can avoid using excess compute capacity on the platform.

Free Tier

The option to try-before-you-buy for JBoss EAP is now available on App Service! The free SKU allows customers to try out JBoss EAP on App Service with no financial commitment. Resources are strictly limited on the free tier with only 60 minutes/day compute and 1GB memory and remote storage. There is also no uptime SLA on the App Service free SKU and no support included from Red Hat. When you are ready to move forward with production workloads, you can easily upgrade to the paid SKUs.

JBoss EAP 8

The newest version of JBoss EAP, JBoss EAP 8 is now fully supported on App Service. JBoss EAP 8 provides implementation of Jakarta EE 10 APIs. With the extended life cycle support period approaching for JBoss EAP 7, upgrading to JBoss EAP 8 is recommended. Code changes are required to migrate from Jakarta EE 8 (supported by JBoss EAP 7.4), which can be identified using the Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA). With a migration path specific to App Service in MTA, upgrading to JBoss EAP 8 and migration to the App Service platform has never been easier.

Using the App Service Free Tier with JBoss EAP 8 allows you to easily plan and test an upgrade. You can take this opportunity to upgrade your on-prem JBoss EAP 7 applications and further modernize by moving to App Service.

BYOL

While pay-as-you-go is the default choice for JBoss EAP applications on the App Service platform, the BYOL option will soon be available for customers with lower cost subscription rates directly negotiated with Red Hat. You can soon apply your existing or unused JBoss EAP subscriptions to App Service.

To use this feature, first register for the Red Hat Cloud Access Program, then create an App Service Web App using either the JBoss EAP 7 BYO License or JBoss EAP 8 BYO License stack. If you have registered with the Red Hat Cloud Access Program, your resource will pass validation for these stacks and you will be billed only for platform fees, not Red Hat license & support fees. The license and support fees (subscription fees) must still be paid directly to Red Hat. If you do not have an existing Red Hat subscription, you must choose the standard JBoss EAP 7 or JBoss EAP 8 stack and pay support & license fees through the Azure Platform.

Joint support still applies to BYOL stacks exactly as it applies to pay-as-you-go stacks on the platform.

Try JBoss EAP on App Service Today!

With BYOL incoming soon, reduced pay-as-you-go license and support fees, free and memory optimized SKU support, and JBoss EAP 8, App Service has never been more affordable, feature-rich, or easier to get started with for running JBoss EAP workloads.
