this means that we are no longer investing in new capabilities, nor are we accepting new feature requests for WSUS. However, we are preserving current functionality and will continue to publish updates through the WSUS channel.
That's all I needed to hear. The cloud? La-la-la, can't-hear-ya.
Frankly, I don't know of any "new capabilities" or "new features" that have been introduced in WSUS in the last...decade? This announcement could've been made 10 years ago, I don't think it would have shattered my world. As long as the data is still published so existing WSUS installations can keep getting updates, this is a total non-event. And since the role is still going to be part of Server 2025, I take it as meaning "the WSUS channel" (as it were) still remains operational until (at least) Server 2025 itself goes out of extended support...in 2035?
I guess I'm not running a large enough environment to notice whatever problems it is other WSUS users are pointing out. From my perspective, it certainly is lacking in reporting, and its PowerShell support could be better, but at least this is not a moving target and we're dealing with known quantities. I'm sure people have come up with their own solutions, which we can live with.
As much as I hate to use this expression, this amounts, in my not-so-humble opinion, to a big nothingburger.
