I don't understand the Microsoft apologists. They defend Microsoft and say things like:
Thank you Microsoft for a new update management system because WSUS 'sucks'.
But, this is a more appropriate response:
WSUS only 'sucks' because you abandoned it. For over a decade, IT professionals have "suffered" while you refuse to implement any minor updates necessary to improve WSUS. Now, you release a replacement product that contains fewer features, requires a complete redeployment, and simply cannot be used in many scenarios. And for this, we must pay more money?! Every month? Forever?! No. No. No. We refuse to reward your behavior by giving you more money. FU Microsoft.
Even if AUM was free (like really free) and we did not need the missing features, AUM is not a valid replacement for WSUS. Why?
- Some customers are not in the cloud - at all. For example, they use Office LTSC and Exchange Server. They don't even have a single Azure login because they have no 365 subscriptions and have never needed, or desired, to visit azure.com. They are not going to hassle with setting all that up just to manage Windows Updates.
Some Many customers have desktops & servers that have no access to the Internet by choice.
Of course, Microsoft can fix the second item by providing a "AUM proxy server" that gets installs on some on-prem server. Then, you configure the offline Windows installations to obtain their updates from that server.
But, you know what? That is WSUS server!
Nir_Froimovici Microsoft please consider:
- Do not eliminate WSUS. I applaud the introduction of new tools to assist IT professionals, but do not deprecate the alternatives until the new tools are feature equivalent and price comparable.
- You will eventually need a "AUM proxy server". To do this, update WSUS to be "better" (consult with Karl-WE -- he has a good understanding of the changes needed). Then add the option for WSUS to integrate with AUM as a proxy. This is a win-win. It allows AUM to manage the offline clients, and allows those customers (you know the people who pay you money) to continue using WSUS.
