Editor's note 3.11.2025 – This blog applies only to the Windows App replacement of the Remote Desktop app downloaded from the Microsoft Store. It does not apply to the Remote Desktop client standalon...
This announcement only pertains to the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store. It does not impact the Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI). That version is still available for download and is still supported.
This statement also does not impact the Remote Desktop web client
I completely understand which app is being removed from the store and that is what frustrates me. The Windows App experience is terrible from a user experience standpoint. There is no ability to organize the connections in any meaningful way. And forcing a work login on the Windows Platform restricts the use of the app to WORK or SCHOOL users. Performance is terrible as well compared to the Store RDP app. I feel like it is a WEBAPP and that is why it is so slow.
Please do NOT require work or school login and I will be happy for now. I just used the iPadOS app - and while the lack of group organization besides "Favorites" or "Devices" is terrible with the 30 or so RDP devices I use daily - the biggest reason it works for me - is the NON-WINDOWS versions allow use out of the box without a login.
My school uses AVD and unfortunately, we have 30-40 sessions available - but very few people use regularly - this clogs the app with too many connections and makes it unorganized when you force a login and favorites doesn't cut it - I have too many RDP sessions I use daily for favorites to make a difference.
Here is what my priorities are for the "Windows App".
1. Do not require login - make the app work as an actual standalone app (Not Webapp as indicated below) WITHOUT work or school login - like every other platform, ios, ipados, macos, android. 2. Add RDP ASAP so we can see the "improvement" over the old store app. 3. Improve Grouping Options or TABS - windows uses tabs for many of the apps, notepad, edge, explorer - why not this one?
Using Apps on Windows that permit RDP sessions to Systems for my Job should just work. Please do not rely on webapps for connections like this - it is concerning Microsoft can't just build applications that are self-contained for simple actions like RDP. I know that app performance is based on how the apps are developed and webapps are never the same compared to native running applications. Please make this app NON-WEBAPP based. I don't want the ability to use this work required app based on whether my EDGE browser is working or not.
