Wow, that is absolutely genius. Great job with the name guys. That won't be confusing at all. How did you come up with it?
"Hey guys, Middle-man-Mike here, trying to justify his job by rethinking things for absolutely no good reason! What I'm thinking this time is that the name Remote Desktop is just a little too on-the-nose. We'd like to have something... i dunno, a little more... meta."
“Meta, yes, exactly, Mike,” Karen chimed in hesitantly, glancing around the room with wide eyes, “but maybe not…too meta?”
But it was too late. Mike was already off and running.
“Right! We don’t want to just say what the app does — that’s so 2008! We want people to feel the app, to wonder, ‘Is this an app? Is it just Windows? Is it the windows in my house, or maybe a window into my soul?’ That’s mystique, people!”
“Or… we could, you know, keep it practical?” ventured Doug from IT. “Maybe like ‘Remote Connector’ or ‘Windows Remote’—”
“Doug,” Mike interrupted, shaking his head in pity. “You just don’t get it. This is the Windows App. It’s bold, it’s sleek, it’s…vague. When they see ‘Windows App,’ they’ll think, ‘Wow, this app could do anything.’ And isn’t that what we want?” He grinned, crossing his arms like he’d just invented the wheel.
Karen leaned in, trying one last time. “But Mike, what about the support calls? ‘Windows App’ is, um, kind of…ambiguous?”
Mike laughed. “Exactly! Ambiguity creates mystery. Mystery creates interest. We’re not just rebranding, Karen. We’re redefining. Let them call IT and ask, ‘What is the Windows App?’ It’s free marketing!”
“Right,” Karen said, resigned. “It’s genius, Mike. Just like that ‘Something happened’ message.”
“Yes!” Mike beamed. “The classics, Karen. People loved that one!”
And with that, “Windows App” was locked in.
